Can Foam Really be Toxic? Learn about Foam Standards by CertiPUR-US®

By Direct Bed Team May 10, 2018 0 comments

Is there any truth to foam being Toxic?

Yes! A Resounding Yes! In 2008, responsible foam suppliers were concerned about sub standard foams being imported from other countries. It was suspected that many of these foams were made with substances that had been banned in Canada & the USA. These chemicals and substances were banned by Chemical Watch Groups for being toxic to both the environment and human health.

Prior to 2008, there was no way for consumers to know whether their foam contained any of these substances.

The advent of CertiPUR-US® Program

The CertiPUR-US® program was developed in 2008 to give consumers the confidence to know that their foam product meets the established standards for content, emmission and durability and are analyzed by independent and credible laboratories. Today, manufacturers from all countries participate in the CertiPUR-US® program as long as they go through the rigorous certification process.

The program certification is based on the living document that sets the standards for acceptable foam content, emmision analysis and durability standards.

CertiPur-US® foams are:

  • Made without Ozone Depleters
  • Made without PBDE’s
  • Made without TDCPP Flame Retardants
  • Made without TCEP Flame Retardants
  • Made without Mercury, Lead or other heavy metals
  • Made without formaldehyde
  • Made without Phthalates regulated by the CPSC
  • Must meet standard of VOC (emmisability) of less than 0.5 Parts per million

Latex Mattresses

Some of our Mattresses such as our Logan Suite, Resolute Suite and Arctica Mattress contain Latex Layers. While Latex is not part of the CertiPUR-US certification process, it is not required to demote a CertiPUR-US certification level for the remaining foams in the Mattress. Any mattress containing latex foam is allowed to maintain the CertiPUR-US certification without penalty.
